Narrative Immersion is a creative studio exploring what stories can do.

We work across health, education, screen, games and digital experiences, bringing together narrative, research, design and technology.

01 / Proposition

Stories can do more than tell us something.

They can place us inside an experience.

They can make complex ideas tangible. Let us see a situation from another point of view. Give us somewhere to rehearse decisions before we make them.

Narrative Immersion develops projects at the intersection of story, research, design and technology. We are interested in the places where story meets health, learning, research, technology and participation.

Heartsore

Heartsore is a narrative-based intervention for young people making the transition from paediatric to adult healthcare.

Rather than approaching transition as another set of instructions, the project uses fictional characters and story to explore the less visible experience of taking increasing responsibility for a lifelong health condition: identity, independence, relationships, uncertainty and self-management.

The Mystery of a Hansom Cab

A graphic novel adaptation of Fergus Hume’s nineteenth-century Melbourne mystery.

The project explores what happens when adaptation is treated not simply as the transfer of plot from one medium to another, but as the reconstruction of a fictional world through image, space and place.

Children of Dust

Three narrative-driven educational games that place entrepreneurship inside a dystopian storyworld.

Designed for young people aged 10–15, Children of Dust explored how learning could happen through characters, decisions and consequence rather than being separated from the fictional experience.

03 / Areas of practice

What we explore

01

Health

How can story help people understand experiences that are difficult to communicate from the outside?

Graphic medicine, lived experience, health communication and narrative interventions that give emotional and experiential dimensions equal weight with information.

02

Learning

How might narrative change not simply what people learn, but how learning feels?

Educational games, digital learning and experiments in adaptive reading and shared narrative experiences.

03

Interactive Narrative

What happens when an audience can act inside a story?

Games and digital experiences in which participation, choice and consequence become part of narrative itself.

04

Screen and Graphic Narrative

Different media ask us to enter stories differently.

Film and comics exploring visual storytelling, adaptation, storyworld, perspective and place.

04 / Narrative Lab

Small experiments in story, memory and discovery.

Narrative Immersion develops digital experiences that explore new ways of entering, organising, creating and sharing narrative.

Some are available to experience now. Others are prototypes or evolving experiments.

06 / Research + Practice

We make things. We also ask how they work.

Narrative Immersion grew out of a long-standing interest in the relationship between story and experience. Serious questions can produce more interesting creative answers.

01

Narrative + immersion

How do stories create the feeling of being somewhere else?

02

Narrative + learning

What happens when knowledge becomes part of an unfolding experience?

03

Narrative + lived experience

How can story make an experience understandable without reducing its complexity?

07 / The studio

The form is determined by the project. The story comes first.

Narrative Immersion is an Australian creative studio founded in Melbourne in 2016. We work collaboratively across health, education, games, screen and emerging digital forms.

08 / Begin

Have something difficult to communicate?

A health experience.
A complex idea.
Something people need to learn.
A story that needs another form.
